A retaining wall is the one piece of landscaping that is actually holding something up, and it is the one where everything that matters is buried before you ever see it. We dig back to solid ground, set a leveling pad of compacted stone, lay drainage stone and filter fabric behind the block so water leaves the wall instead of pushing on it, and run geogrid back into the slope on anything with real height on it. Then the block goes up. We build walls all over Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens, Dayton and Dunlap — from a two-course seat wall around a patio to tiered walls running the length of a driveway.
Washed stone and filter fabric behind every wall, with an outlet. A wall that traps water behind it is a wall with a clock on it — saturated soil weighs roughly twice what drained soil weighs.
Layers of grid tied back into the slope so the wall and the hill behind it act as one mass. This is the step you cannot add later and the step the cheap bid leaves out.
Dug down to undisturbed ground and compacted before the first course. Every leaning wall we get called to look at moved from the bottom.

Paver Patios
A paver patio is a road built for people: the pavers on top are the easy part, and the base underneath is what decides whether it is still flat in five years. We excavate, bring in crusher run and compact it in lifts, screed the bedding sand, lay the field and cut the border, then lock the edge and sweep in polymeric sand so the joints hold and the weeds do not. We lay patios across Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens, Dayton and Dunlap, in large-format modern pavers, tumbled brick, circle kits and just about anything the yard calls for.
Crusher run compacted a few inches at a time instead of dumped and rolled once. A patio that settles settles in the middle, and the middle is where you put the table.
Edge restraint spiked all the way around. Pavers do not spread from the center — they spread from the outside in, and an unlocked border is how a patio grows a gap.
Swept and set so the joints stay full. Loose sand washes out with the first real storm and takes the pattern with it.
Paver Walkways & Driveways
The walk to your front door is the first thing anybody sees and the surface everybody walks on, so it gets the same base as a patio rather than pavers set on dirt. We excavate, compact, screed, lay and lock the edge, with a border that follows the curve instead of fighting it. Inlays and banding are worth doing here more than anywhere else, because a front walk is short enough that the detail actually reads. We work across Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens, Dayton and Dunlap.
Excavated, stoned and compacted. A front walk takes more foot traffic per square foot than anything else on the property.
Cut and laid to the line of the walk. A border that goes straight while the walk curves is the detail that makes a job look homemade.
Diamonds, contrasting bands and pattern changes. On a walk this is the cheapest upgrade there is, because the area is small.

Stone Columns & Masonry
A stone column at the end of the driveway is the cheapest thing you can do to make a property look finished, and it is also the thing most likely to be built badly, because from the road nobody can see whether there is a footing under it. Ours go on a poured footing below frost, get a block or masonry core, and then the stone goes on the outside with a cut cap on top. Entrance columns, mailbox columns, gate posts and light posts, around Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens, Dayton and Dunlap.
Poured below frost line. A column set on dirt cracks at the base the first hard winter and there is no fixing it afterward.
Block or masonry core with the stone as the face. That is what keeps a column square instead of slowly going out of plumb.
A cut cap on top so water runs off instead of soaking down through the middle of the column and freezing.
Landscaping & Planting Beds
Hardscape without planting looks like construction that stopped early. We shape and edge the beds, set the plants at the right spacing for what they will actually be in five years instead of what looks full on the day we leave, and mulch them. Where the yard does not drain or does not sit right, that gets fixed first — we run a skid steer and a telehandler, so grading and hauling is not a separate contractor. Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens, Dayton and Dunlap.
If water runs toward the house or stands in the yard, no amount of mulch fixes it. The dirt gets moved first.
A cut edge or a stone border is what keeps the mulch in the bed and the grass out of it, so the bed still has a shape next spring.
Planted for what they grow into. Beds that look perfect on day one are beds you are pulling plants out of by year three.

Sod & Lawn Installation
Sod is the fastest way to finish a yard, and on any kind of slope it is the only way that actually works — seed on a grade ends up at the bottom of the grade after the first storm. We strip what is there, grade it so water leaves the house, prep and level the soil, then lay the sod tight with the seams staggered and roll it in. It goes in behind our own wall and patio work most of the time, but we will do a lawn on its own too, around Cleveland, Chattanooga, Athens, Dayton and Dunlap.
The lawn is also your drainage. If the grade runs the wrong way, sod just hides it until it is a crawlspace problem.
Tilled and raked out before a single roll goes down. Sod laid over lumpy ground stays lumpy and scalps every time it gets mowed.
Laid tight and offset like brick, then rolled. Gaps between rolls dry out at the edges and that is where the weeds come in.
